Wilma Zekan

Obituary of Wilma Frances Zekan

Wilma Frances Zekan passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2023, in Sacramento at the age of 97. Wilma fought to the very end to stay alive. After successful surgery to her left leg, the celebration was cut short as her medical team fought to keep her blood pressure from dropping. Her youngest daughter Elizabeth, son-in-law Dennis, grandson Nicholas and his wife Michelle were by her side. Wilma was born January 11, 1926, in Ohio.

Wilma is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth (Dennis) Nelson of Pioneer and Christina (Hoyt) Harritt of New Mexico; sons, David (Maria) Zekan of Chula Vista and Mark (Bev) Zekan of North Carolina; daughter- in-law, Dorothy Zekan of La Habra Heights; as well as her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces too numerous to list. Wilma is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph of 53 years, daughter, Mary Zekan, son, Joseph Zekan Jr, her parents, and her siblings.

Wilma was the sixth of eleven children. Wilma lived a very long and eventful life, and, as many know, she loved to share her stories. Stories of growing up during the Great Depression; of her father working in the coal mines; her grandmother being a mid-wife; her parents extensive farm; and fondly the story meeting the love of her life, Joe Zekan, the boy next door who joined the Navy during WWII while she worked on war planes. Wilma’s stories will be missed by family and friends alike.

Wilma said living in Amador County for the last 38 years was very peaceful for her. She enjoyed the beautiful hills, wonderful people and the four seasons. Wilma loved her family and loved to celebrate with them the holidays, birthdays, graduations, weddings all life’s events she could. She was even able to take part in her granddaughter Allison’s wedding 1-1/2 weeks prior to her passing. As much as she loved her family, she also loved her neighbors and friends from Our Lady of the Pines. Wilma was blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family.
